Q&A with Klev Hegdal
by Lauri Sturdivant
Klev Hegdal, Middle Falls Landscape
Klev Hegdal is the photographer in the trio artists show, Interwoven, on display in the gallery at the Siskiyou Arts Museum. Klev’s photography, along with Trinity Holsworth’s paintings and Donna Winger’s basket weavings, will be on display through April 5, 2025. This exhibition is full of texture and colors connected by their friendship and their artworks. The refined clarity of Klev’s photography is exaggerated by the organic fibrous textures of Donna’s basketry. Trinity’s painting offers a visual bridge between the extremes of the slick images and rough baskets.
“Our statement for the show is to show our own connections and relationship with nature. With my landscape photos, Trinity's paintings of the world around her, and Donna's baskets crafted from foraged materials, the title "Interwoven" is perfect. I also think the gallery space really reflects that in how all of our art is displayed together. All of our pieces are equally balanced in the room.”
Q&A
Lauri Sturdivant: What is your favorite thing about Trinity?
Klev Hegdal: My favorite thing about Trinity is how nice and helpful she is. I first met her during the gallery setup and she was super helpful with tips on hanging and measuring the walls to make sure everything was aligned properly and not too high, too low or off-center.
Lauri: What inspires you?
Klev: Inspiration can come in many forms for me, mostly just the natural beauty of our area. But also looking through art magazines or sports magazines to see how other photographers framed their images or used a certain technique.
Lauri: Soup or salad?
Klev: Soup, either clam chowder or minestrone.
Lauri: Do you make art everyday?
Klev: Unfortunately not, I have a day job that takes up a lot of time. But I would love it if photography became my primary income!
Lauri: Cats or Dogs?
Klev: Dogs. My wife says I have "Golden Retriever Energy".
Lauri: Where is your favorite get away retreat spot?
Klev: My favorite local get away spots are to one of the many river spots and swim in the summertime. But I also really enjoy going to the coast for a change of scenery.
Lauri: What is your favorite museum?
Klev: My favorite museums would either be the Crocker Art Museum or the California State Railroad Museum, both in Sacramento. The Crocker always has interesting rotating exhibits coming through and the Railroad Museum is great for interaction and getting to touch and walk through old trains and train cars.
Lauri: Have you ever been skydiving?
Klev: I have not been skydiving but I have thought about doing it, maybe just once to say I did.
Lauri: Where do you dream of traveling to?
Klev: Currently, I've really been wanting a Hawaiian vacation, but who doesn't? I've also been wanting to travel to Iceland and see all the waterfalls and active volcanoes. Iceland almost seems like a different world.
